Tamarind is a large evergreen tree that grows in the tropics. It is native to Asia and, probably, to Africa. Tamarind is grown as a shade tree in southern Florida, USA. The tree may grow up to 75 feet (23 meters) tall. It has leaves that consist of 10-18 pairs of leaflets and small, pale yellow flowers. The tamarind tree produces brown pods that are 2 to 6 inches long. The pods contain an acidic pulp that may be eaten fresh or used to make jams, sauces, syrups and drinks.

The rich, sweet-and-sour flesh of the fruit is moist and sticky. Tamarind has many attributed medical properties: it is considered a mild laxative and digestive, used to treat bronchial disorders, recommended for a sore throat. It is antiseptic, used in eye-baths and for the treatment of ulcers. Being highly acidic, it is a refrigerant (cooling in the heat) and febrifuge (for fighting fevers). Consuming tamarind is suggested during pregnancy in order to cure morning sickness. Its leaf can be used as medicines for coughing, dysentery, phlegm and blood clot in colon, and can be steamed to cure flu in children. Its seed is rich and has acidic taste, with the qualities of curing indigestion, ulcers, sore throat and chronic wounds.
